RevOps Manager vs Data Ops Agency: Which Do You Need?

A RevOps manager costs £65-85K plus 3 months to ramp. A data ops agency costs £3-5K per month and starts in a week. Here is when each option makes sense.

Dobrin Dobrev6 min read

A mid-level RevOps Manager in London commands a salary of £65,000-85,000. Add employer National Insurance (13.8%), pension contributions (5%), recruitment fees (15-20% of salary), and the tools they will need access to, and the fully loaded cost for year one lands between £95,000 and £130,000. Then factor in the 2-3 month ramp period before they are fully productive - during which your data problems continue to compound.

A data operations agency, by contrast, typically charges £3,000-5,000 per month, starts delivering within the first week, and does not require office space, benefits, or management overhead. The annual cost: £36,000-60,000.

On paper, the agency looks like the obvious choice. In practice, the decision is more nuanced - because the two options serve different needs, and choosing the wrong one can be more expensive than either.

What a RevOps Manager Actually Does

A RevOps Manager is a strategic role. They own the revenue technology stack, design and optimise cross-functional processes, build and maintain reporting frameworks, manage CRM configuration, and serve as the operational bridge between marketing, sales, and customer success.

The best RevOps Managers combine technical skills (CRM administration, data analysis, basic automation) with business acumen (understanding pipeline dynamics, forecasting methodology, and go-to-market strategy). They sit in leadership meetings, influence hiring decisions, and shape how the company measures and manages revenue.

What they typically do not do - or should not be spending their time on - is manual data work. Deduplication runs, list cleaning, bulk enrichment, record standardisation, and ongoing data maintenance are operational tasks that consume hours but do not require strategic judgement. A £75,000 RevOps Manager spending 40% of their time on data hygiene is a £30,000 annual misallocation.

What a Data Ops Agency Actually Does

A data operations agency handles the execution layer: CRM data audits, systematic deduplication, contact and company enrichment, list building and verification, ongoing data quality monitoring, and compliance checks. The work is structured, repeatable, and measurable.

The agency model works because data operations benefit from specialisation and tooling economies of scale. An agency team runs deduplication workflows daily across multiple clients. They maintain subscriptions to enrichment platforms, verification tools, and compliance databases that would cost a single company £20,000-40,000 per year in standalone licences. They have refined processes for common scenarios - CRM migrations, bulk cleanups, ongoing maintenance - that an internal hire would need months to develop.

What an agency does not do is attend your leadership meetings, redesign your sales process, or make strategic decisions about your tech stack. They operate within a defined scope, execute against agreed deliverables, and report on outcomes.

The Full Cost Comparison

Here is a realistic year-one cost comparison for a UK B2B company with 30,000 CRM records and a 15-person revenue team.

Internal RevOps Manager:

  • Base salary: £75,000
  • Employer NI (13.8%): £10,350
  • Pension (5%): £3,750
  • Recruitment fee (18%): £13,500
  • Tools and licences: £8,000-15,000
  • Ramp period (3 months at reduced productivity): ~£18,750 in effective cost
  • Management time: £5,000-10,000 equivalent
  • Year one total: £134,350-146,350

Data Ops Agency (mid-tier retainer):

  • Monthly retainer: £4,000 × 12 = £48,000
  • Initial audit/setup: £2,000-4,000 (often included)
  • No recruitment cost, no NI, no pension, no tools
  • Productive from week one
  • Year one total: £48,000-52,000

The cost difference is significant - roughly £85,000-95,000 in year one. But cost alone should not drive the decision.

When to Hire Internally

An internal RevOps Manager is the right choice when:

You need strategic ownership. If your revenue operations need fundamental redesign - new CRM implementation, complete process overhaul, tech stack consolidation - you need someone who lives inside the business, understands the politics, and can drive change over months or years.

You are scaling past 50 employees. At this stage, the operational complexity warrants a dedicated internal function. The RevOps Manager becomes the foundation of a team that will grow with the company.

You have the management capacity. A RevOps hire needs onboarding, context, and ongoing management - particularly in the first six months. If your leadership team is stretched, the hire will underperform regardless of their capability.

Data ops is only part of the need. If you also need process design, reporting frameworks, and tech stack management, a single hire that covers all of these is more efficient than an agency that covers only the data layer.

When to Use an Agency

A data ops agency is the right choice when:

Your immediate problem is data quality. If your CRM is dirty, your enrichment is stale, and your reps are wasting time on data tasks, you need execution now - not in three months after a hire has ramped.

You are pre-Series B or under 50 employees. At this stage, a full-time RevOps hire may be premature. An agency gives you operational capability at a fraction of the cost, with the flexibility to scale up or down as needs change.

You need to bridge a gap. Between recognising the need for RevOps and having the right person in the role, an agency prevents the data problems from compounding. Several of our clients started with a retainer, then hired internally, and kept the retainer for execution while the new hire focused on strategy.

You need specialist skills intermittently. CRM migration, major cleanup projects, or compliance overhauls require deep expertise for a defined period. An agency provides that expertise without a permanent headcount commitment.

Considering your options? Our Pipeline Retainer starts at £3,000/month and covers CRM data quality, enrichment, deduplication, and compliance monitoring - with no recruitment risk and no ramp time.

The Hybrid Model

The most effective setup for many UK scale-ups is a hybrid: an internal RevOps hire for strategy, process design, and cross-functional alignment, supplemented by an agency for data operations execution. The internal person focuses on the work that requires business context and strategic judgement. The agency handles the systematic, repeatable data work that benefits from specialised tooling and processes.

This model typically costs £100,000-130,000 annually (£75,000 salary plus £25,000-55,000 agency retainer) but delivers more value than either option alone. The RevOps Manager is freed from data grunt work. The agency operates more effectively with a strategic counterpart inside the business.

Which gap is more urgent for your team right now - strategic ownership or operational execution?
